Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries admits that it was an “error in judgment” to wave a banner mocking AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez.

The Dutchman wrote an Instagram post where he looked back on the Nerazzurri’s title celebrations. He wrote that he would “never forget” the parade, but also apologized for the banner.

Inter wingback Dumfries had one high-profile moment during Inter’s title celebrations on Sunday.

During the open top bus parade, the 28-year-old was handed a banner at one stage.

The banner came from the fans in the crowd alongside the bus. Reportedly, Inter striker Marko Arnautovic was the one to receive the banner and then hand it to Dumfries.

The banner depicted Inter wingback Dumfries with his Milan opposite number Hernandez as a dog on a leash.

The meaning of the banner was hardly a secret. Dumfries and Hernandez have clashed a number of times in recent derby matches.

This included in the derby last Monday, in which Inter clinched the Serie A title.

Dumfries Apologizes For Banner Insulting Theo Hernandez: “Error In Judgment”

Inter President Steven Zhang had urged his players to “uphold Inter’s values” and celebrate in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner when they clinched the title.

By and large, that was the case. Inter avoided excessive banter or mockery of their city rivals Milan.

But the banner that Dumfries flew was one instance in which a player crossed a certain line in terms of sportsmanship.

Dumfries wrote, “Yesterday was the most beautiful day for me, all the players, and everyone at the club. Thank you so much to the fans who turned out in their thousands at the parade.”

“It was a great feeling to celebrate with all of you, it meant so much to the team. During the parade, i held up a banner that displayed an inappropriate image.”

“I am a player who loves rivalry in football, it is a crucial part of any game.”

“I realize that holding up the banner was an error of judgment on my part and not smart at all.”

“Let’s move on to focusing on what has been the most amazing season for Inter Milan.”

“Thank you once again for all your support this season, and for the celebrations yesterday, I will never forget them.”
