Lions QB Jared Goff Shares Brutal Comment On Detroit Media
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions are coming off of their best season in three decades, but quarterback Jared Goff is not happy with how the Detroit media portrays things.

During a recent appearance on the Willbo Trading Cards podcast, Goff called out the Motor City media for its incessant negativity.

“I have this like, I probably need to drop it pretty soon here because I’m hopefully gonna be in Detroit for a long time, but I have this thing with our local media where like they almost like relish in negativity at times,” Goff said. “And maybe that’s what gets clicked and that’s what sells, but it’s no longer what they need to live in. Like, ‘Hey guys, we have a good team. We’ve had success. We can be happy about that we can celebrate that and not have to write about how we’re constantly the underdog.’ No, teams are gonna be gunning for us now. We won the division and all that.”

Because the Lions had been so bad for so long, the Detroit media may very well be in autopilot with how it assesses the team.

This past season, the Lions went 12-5 and won the NFC North, marking their first division title since 1993. They then won their first playoff game since January 1992 and made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game, where they ultimately blew a 24-7 halftime lead to the San Francisco 49ers.

“I’m probably overthinking it in my head and it’s the chip on my shoulder and the competitor in me,” added Goff.

Goff just completed his third season in Detroit and threw for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 67.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 97.9. He then put together a pretty impressive playoff run, totaling 837 yards and four touchdowns with no picks while completing 69.4 percent of his throws and registering a 103.3 passer rating in three contests.

The Lions are widely viewed as legitimate contenders in the NFC heading into next season, and even Detroit’s own media likely has a positive outlook on the club going into 2024.

Hopefully, Jared Goff and Co. can continue bringing some success to a city that has been starving for it.
