Robert Horry Prasies Pop, Wemby

Horry failed to build relationships with international players, claimed that Gregg Popovich was more difficult than Phil Jackson, called the Spurs boring, and claimed that Popovich holds grudges.

On the positive, he has claimed that Popovich is very personable and kind.

Given the feelings involved between Horry and the Spurs, and his denial that he is a Popovich disciple, he can give a more level-headed approach to Victor Wembanyama, who is taking the league by storm,

Most people either believe Wemby has the potential to be the greatest ever or he will bust and fizzle out of the league. These opinions are largely based on individual feelings surrounding the Spurs organization. Horry has seen firsthand the success the Spurs have had, but hasn’t allowed himself to get swept up.

On a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Horry was practically gushing with praise. “His ability to see the game and think the game is like a ten-year vet, and that’s what has impressed me the most. You know, his size, of course, he can put it on the floor, he can dunk from anywhere, but his ability to think the game and anticipate things is on a whole other level,” Horry said.

He did express that Wembanyama is unlikely to play a full slate of games and that the Spurs need to listen to his body, but “learning by fire” is the best way for Wemby to find success.

While Wembanyama’s instant offensive impact has been questioned, his defense is expected to be rock-solid from day one.

“I remember playing against Manute Bol and Mark Eaton, and what you have to do is just go to the other side of the floor,” said Horry. “His size is above and beyond anyone’s I’ve ever seen who is that athletic.”

Will Wembayma lead the league in blocks? “No doubt!”

As for Coach Pop and how he will manage Wembanyama during his rookie season? “I think Gregg is going to let him do whatever he wants to do,” laughed Horry.

Wembanyama and the Spurs begin their season tonight against the Dallas Mavericks. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
